Onyx is formed in caves and is made up of very small crystal structures that are called cryptocrystalline. The name onyx originates from the Greek translation for claw or fingernail. Onyx comes in a variety of pastel and flesh-toned colors that form cloud like patterns. Onyx countertops are often a rare sight as this beautiful stone is more commonly used vertically due to it’s striking and dramatic nature. However, Onyx is a beautiful and edgy alternative to granite or marble and can be back-lit for an ethereal effect.
